What is the School Council?

Around the year 2000, the Georgia Legislature passed a billed which included the creation of School Councils.

The new law required that each local school have a School Council, consisting of the school principal, parents of students enrolled in the school, members of the business community, certified teachers and students.

The reason School Councils were created are as follows:

  • To improve communication and participation of parents and the community in the management and operation of schools.
  • Bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve difficult education problems
  • Improve academic achievement
  • Provide support for teachers and administrators
  • Bring parents into the school-based decision making process
  • To help the local board of education develop and nurture participation
  • To bring parents and the community together with teachers and school administrators to create a better understanding of and mutual respect for each other’s concerns
  • To share ideas for school improvement

  • School Councils function as policy level advisory bodies, representing the community of parents and businesses.

Student Survey Results - January 2010
The School Council created at student survey to use as a barometer to gauge the school's social and academic environments. We are the only school in the Fayette County School District with this kind of in depth information. We hope you will find the survey results informative. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments. We also have the data broken down into male and female groups at each grade level, available upon request.

Thus far, we have worked on implementing better infection control standards at the school to prevent the spread of H1N1 and other viruses.

Additionally, we are working on an innovative student survey on the school climate, social issues, peer culture, teacher support and parental involvement. The survey will be used as a tool to measure how the school is performing on various fronts and may determine areas requiring further study.

The School Council also became aware that J.C. Booth Middle School ranks last in the student-to-computer ratio in the Fayette County School District.  We have met with school officials and made a list of written recommendations to the Fayette County Board of Education.

We continually review school testing progress as well.

We look forward to hearing from you.  Please know that our meetings are open to the public and your attendance is welcome.
